He was the son of James Winterbotham Lewis a hosiery manufacturer and Eliza Lewis and the brother of Edith, James, Stanley, Caroline, Alice and Frederick Lewis. In 1871 they lived at 9 Arboretum Street Nottingham. In 1891 the family lived at 19 Pelham Terrace Standard Hill Nottingham.

Military History

He was Chief Engineer to the South Indian Railway and a major in their volunteers.
