William was the son of Alfred and Julia Collier and the brother of Robert Collier of 16 Rawson Street New Basford and in 1900 when he was 18 years of age joined the army. In 1901 he was in Aldershot Military Hospital. By 1911 Julia was listed as housekeeper and is still with Charles Talbot and they are living at 10 Newmarket Terrace Newmarket Road Bulwell. In 1911 he was serving in India with 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters.
William Henry Collier enlisted at Derby in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) on 6 December 1900. He was 18 years and 3 months old, 5 feet 7 inches tall. On 5 July 1901 he was posted to the 2nd Battalion and saw service with them in South Africa (Boer War). overseas service - Malta - 5/7/01 to 13/4/02 South Africa - 25/2/02 to 4/9/02 (posted 1st Battalion on 1/9/02) Ceylon - 5/9/02 to 4/12/04 Singapore - 5/12/04 to 10/12/06 India 11/12/06 to 22/1/09; On 23/1/09 he was transferred to the Army Reserve. He was mobilised on the outbreak of war and posted to the 2nd Battalion on 10 October 1914. He spent time in the UK after being hospitalised with - 'graze on buttock from a bayonet' (8/3/15 to 14/6/16) On his return to the Western Front he was posted to 1st Battalion although on 8/7/1916 he was attached to 'A' company, 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment near Loos. Queen's South Africa Medal with 3 clasps, 1914 star, BWM, VM; He was awarded the 1914 Star. According to the Medal Roll in 1991 a nephew requested details of William Henry's service. Loos Memorial
