Family History

Albert Marshall was born in 1887 the son of William, a bricklayer, and Clara (née Standerline) Marshall. William was born in 1848 at Market Rasen and Clara in 1852 also in Lincolnshire. They married around 1871 and had ten children. Ernest’s siblings were William b.1872 Hibalstow, Lincolnshire Louise b.1875 Hibalstow, Ada b.1877 Hibalstow, Herbert b.1883 Nottingham, Emily b.1885,Nottingham, Albert b.1887 Nottingham, Clara b.1889 Nottingham, Ernest b. 1891 Nottingham (killed in action 15/10/1916), Rachel b.1894 Nottingham and Arthur b.1898 Nottingham. In 1901 the family was living at 15 Commerce Place Barker Gate Nottingham. His mother Clara died in 1907 in Nottingham aged 57. In 1911 the family lived at 12 Pierrepoint Street Nottingham. Most of the children had left home by then but Albert and Ernest were listed by their father as soldiers on the 1911 Census. At the time of his sons’ deaths William Marshall was living at 7 Carter Place Carter Gate Nottingham.

Military History

'D' Coy Menin Gate Memorial Panel 39 & 41 William Marshall also enlisted initially in the Lincolnshire Regiment having attested on 10th July 1915 in Nottingham. He later served with the Labour Corps. He saw service with the British Expeditionary Force from 3rd September 1917 and survived the war. He was demobilised on 27th March 1919
