Family History

Arthur George Frederick Messom was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of George Frederick Messom a joiner and Maud Alice Messom née Ballard of of 2 Wainman's Yard Woolpack Lane Nottingham. His father George Frederick was born in 1876 at Nottingham, his mother Maud Alice Ballard was born in 1873 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1894 at Nottingham, they had three children Arthur b1894, Harold b1897 and Doris Maud b1900. In the 1911 census we find that Arthur George has left the family home, he is living at 38 Main Street, Shirebrook, he is living with his aunt and uncle, Isaac Howard Voce 31 yrs a hotel barman and his family, Arthur is 16 yrs of age and is an engine cleaner for a railway company. In the same 1911 census we find his father boarding at 49 Cavendish Street, Shirebrook, Mansfield, he is 37 yrs of age and is a joiner, he is boarding with Walter Wilkinson 31 yrs single and a chimney sweep.

Military History

Private Arthur George Frederick enlisted and initially served with the service number 14140 in the Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in France on 8th June 1915, he was serving with the 105th Company Machine Gun Corps when he was killed in action on 26th November 1916, he is buried at Faubourg D'amiens Cemetery, Arras
