He was the son of Thomas Willam and Evangeline Agnes (née Barker) Bates and the brother of Charlotte, Arthur, Eva and Margaret Bates. Thomas William Bates died aged 34 in 1883. In 1886, Evangeline married Samuel Butler. In 1891, they lived on Forest Road West, Nottingham with Evangeline's first family and the children from their marriage Herbert and Frank Butler. By 1901, when Robert was not listed on the census, the family had moved to Church Street, Bingham. Evangeline had been widowed again and kept a hotel. She died at Kiddrrminster aged 80 in 1933. Robert was the husband of Olivia Elizabeth Murray Bates of Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia.
Huntsmoor, Mercantile Marine SS Huntsmoor, built by Flensburger Schiffbau Ges., Flensburg in 1901 and operated at the time of her loss by The Shipping Controller (Jenkins Bros.), London, was a British steamer of 4957 tons. On February 20th, 1918, Huntsmoor, on a voyage from Havre to Southampton, was sunk by the German submarine UB-40 (Karl Dobberstein), 23 miles S1/2W from the Owers lightvessel. 20 people were lost.
