He was the son of William and Sarah Brown (census records give her name as both 'Sarah' and 'Mary'). In 1881 they were living at 9 Lincoln Lane (Duke of York Yard), Boston, Lincolnshire. William (41) had been born in Bengal, India, and was a pensioner, 17th Regiment of Foot, while Sarah (40) had been born in Wainfleet, Lincolnshire. Seven children were recorded on the census in 1881 and their places of birth suggest their father had served overseas with the regiment; Edward (18, b. Halifax, Nova Scotia), William (16, b. Halifax, Nova Scotia), Thomas (14, b. Toronto), David (11, place of birth recorded as Croft, Lincolnshire, and also Aldershot, Hants), Andrew A. (5, b. Ireland), Jane (3) b. Shorncliffe, Kent) and Joseph M, (3 months, b. Boston, Lincolnshire). Their mother had been widowed by the time of the next census in 1891 and was living with her six sons at 5 Haydn Road, Sherwood, Nottingham. By 1901 she was living with her youngest son, Joseph, at 4 Highfield Grove, Carrington; she was a laundrywoman and he was a gardener. Andrew married Florence Maude (nee Brown) in the registration district of Ipswich, Suffolk, in 1904 (registration Apr/May/Jun). Andrew's nephew, Private William Henry Brown, 17th Bn Sherwood Foresters, the son of his brother William, was killed on 8 July 1916 age 21.
