Claude Lancaster was born in 1890 in Nottingham and was the youngest son of John Charles, an engineering works manager, and Mary Elizabeth Lancaster née Beaumont. His father John Charles was born in 1848 in Armitage Bridge, Yorkshire, and his mother Mary Elizabeth Beaumont was born in 1875 in Hopton, Yorkshire. They were married on 27th December 1873 in the Parish Church at Dewsbury, Yorkshire, and went on to have 6 children: Florence b1878 Hunslett, Yorkshire, Laura b1881 Radford, Maud b1887 Radford, Herbert b1888 Radford, Arthur b1889 Radford and Claude b1890 Radford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Churchville, Hartley Road, Nottingham, and are shown as John Charles 63 yrs, an engineering works manager, who is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 58 yrs and their children, Florence 33 yrs married a dress maker, Laura 30 yrs single a dress maker, Herbert 23 yrs single an auctioneer's assistant, and Claude 21 yrs an architect's assistant. Also at the address is Dulcie Taylor 5 yrs their granddaughter. Claude married his wife Catherine B Attwood on 23rd January 1916 at St Giles Church, West Bridgford, and they lived at 33 Charworth Road, West Bridgford.
Claude enlisted at Derby on 2nd March 1916 giving his address as 10 Church Ville, Nottingham, He was mobilised on 16th February 1917 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters (N&D Regiment). He embarked at Folkstone on 8th May 1917, landing in France the following day. He was posted to 2/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters on 29th January 1918. He was reported missing in action on 21st March 1918 and later deemed to have been wounded and taken prisoner on 21st March 1918. He died of his wounds on 29th March 1918 and was buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez (grave reference XX.E.8).
