Family History

Charles Arthur Knight was born in 1896, the son of Arthur Knight and Louisa Knight née Hopewell. Charles' parents were married in 1893 in Nottingham and following his father's death his mother married Joseph Newton in 1905 (Nottingham). In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Florence Road, Stoke Lane, Gedling, and are shown as Joseph Newton, head of the family 37 yrs a stationary engine driver; he is living with his wife Louisa Newton 40 yrs and her son Charles A Knight an assistant engineer and their son Raymond Newton 1 year. In the census it is stated that they have been married for 6 years and have had 2 children, one of whom has died. Charles was engaged to Alice at the time of his death.

Military History

Charles died in the Military Hospital at Retford and a military funeral was held at Nottingham General Cemetery where he was buried on 2 February 1915.

In memoriam published 29th January 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “KNIGHT. – In loving memory of my dear son, Pte. Charles Arthur Knight, of Colwick, who died January 29th, 1915, aged 19 years. Not a morning dawns, not a night returns, but what I think of him. – From his loving mother. “KNIGHT. – In loving memory of our dear grandson..., Pte. Charles Arthur, died January 29th, 1915. The sun shines on the heavenly grave of one we loved but could not save. – Grandma and grandpa. “KNIGHT. – In loving memory of our dear cousin Charlie, who died January 29th, 1915. Fondly remembered. – Mabel and Floss. “KNIGHT. – In loving memory of Charlie (Pte. C. A. Knight), S.R.Y., who passed away January 29th, 1915.
