Charles Ernest Chesterton was born in 1894 the son of William a builders plumber and painter and Elizabeth Chesterton née Cort of 9 North Street, Shoulder of Mutton, Kirkby in Ashfield, William was born in 1855 at Leicester, Elizabeth Cort was born in 1859 at Spratton, Northamptonshire, married 1881 at Northamptonshire, they had 9 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. Charles married Hannah Dallison (born 11th March 1895) in 1916 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 11 North Street, Shoulder of Mutton, Kirkby in Ashfield and had a son Charles Ernest Chesterton born 12th December 1916 Commencing 23rd October 1916 his widow Hannah was awarded a pension of 10 shilling a week.

Military History

Private Charles Ernest Chesterton enlisted on 3rd November 1914, giving his age as 20 yrs and 8 months he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. A note on his army service record shows he went absent from his regiment on 8th April 1916 at Nottingham. It was later found he had died at his home address on 18th April 1916 from Cerebro Meningitis. He was buried at Kingsway (Old) Cemetery, Kirkby in Ashfield, he did not see any overseas service.
