Family History

Ernest Caunt was born in 1893 the the son of Jesse a miners labourer and Mary Caunt née Smith and the brother of Luther, Arthur and Lewis Caunt. In 1911 they lived at 93 Low Moor Road East Kirkby Nottinghamshire. Jesse was born in 1860 at Skegby, Mary Smith was born in 1867 at Newark, they were married on 5th October 1885 at Skegby they had 8 children, however 1 died in infancy or early childhood

Military History

Private Ernest Caunt enlisted at Mansfield , he went to France 29th August 1915 and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, on the first day of the German Spring Offensive or Kaiserschlacht (“Kaiser’s Battle”) whilst the battalion was in the line near Noreuil, north-east of Bapaume, France. Commemorated : Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.

Extra Information

His brother Private Frederick Caunt enlisted at Mansfield he initially served with the service number 17093 in The Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 28 October 1916 whilst serving with the 1/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. . having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 10B and 12B)
