Wallace Fletcher Tomlinson was born in 1896 in Radford and was the son of Samuel Fletcher Tomlinson a coal miner and Ada Tomlinson née Fletcher Both his parents were born in 1897 in Langley Mill, Derbyshire, they were married on 5th August 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Aldecar Registration District, Samuels address given upon his marriage was 106 Sailsbury Street, Radford. they went on to have the following children, Wallace Fletcher b1896 Radford, Edward b1899 Church Greasley and Jesse A b1901 at Worksop. In the 1901 census the family are living at Bakestone Moor, Whitwell, Derbyshire and were shown as Samuel Fletcher a coal miner , he is living with his wife Ada and their children, Wallace F 4 yrs and Edward 2 yrs. The family later emigrated to New Zealand and they lived at Peel Street Cobden Greymouth New Zealand.(an important coal town )
Private Wallace Fletcher Tomlinson, enlisted on 29th May 1916 in New Zealand he served with the 2nd Battalion Auckland Regiment, N.Z.E.F. He embarked from Wellington on 23rd September 1916, disembarking at Devonport on 18th November 1916. He landed in France on 9th December 1916 and was killed in action on 21st February 1917. He is buried in Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue.
Article published on 24th March 1917 in the Poverty Bay Herald :- Lance-corporal W. F. Tomlinson, son of Mr. S. F. Tomlinson, Cobden, Greymouth, reported missing and believed to be wounded on February 21st, was born at Nottingham, England. He was twenty years of age and was employed as an engineering cadet in the Public Works Department, Stratford, He was educated at the Cobden primary school and at the District High School.
