Leonard was born in 1890 in Hyson Green and he was the son of the late Samuel a lace maker and Alice Simmins née Tyers . His father Samuel was born in 1845 in Chard Somerset, his mother Alice Tyers was born in 1848 in Wymswold, Leicestershire, they were married in 1874 in Nottingham and went on to have 8 children , sadly 3 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Hyson Green were John b1876, Walter b1878, Arthur b1882, Mabel b1888 and Leonard b1890. His father Samuel died in 1909 in Nottingham , he was 64 yrs of age In 1911 the family were living at lived at 46 Ortzen Street Peveril Street Nottingham and were shown as Alice head of the family a widow 63 yrs , she is living with her children Mabel 23 yrs a pinafore examiner and Leonard 21 yrs a grocery and provisions assistant. He married Florrie Hallworth born 24th December 1887 in 1917 in Nottingham and they lived at 43 Kildare Road The Wells Road Nottingham and 4 Bute Avenue, Lenton. Commencing 17th June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Gunner Leonard Simmins, enlisted at Nottingham and served with “D” Battalion Tank Corps, was killed in action on 20th November 1917. He is buried in Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetery British Extension.
