Percy Brown

Percy Brown was born in 1898 at Kirkby in Ashfield and was the son of Samuel a coal miner (hewer) and Mary Ann Brown née Twigg of 20 Prospect Street, Kirkby in Ashfield. His father Samuel was born in 1858 at Kirkby in Ashfield and his mother Mary Ann Twigg was born in 1867 at Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. They went on to 6 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Alice b1887, Mary Ann b1889, Hilda b1891, Ernest b1893 and Percy b1898, all were born in Kirkby in Ashfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Prospect Street, Kirkby in Ashfield and are shown as Samuel Brown 53 yrs a coal miner (hewer) he is living with his wife Mary Ann 44 yrs and their children, Alice 24 yrs working in a glue works, Mary Ann 22 yrs bagging in a tinworks, Hilda 20 yrs working in a tin works, Ernest 18 yrs a pony driver (underground) and Percy 13 yrs a bank lad in a colliery.
