Family History

George Broughton was born in 1881 the son of George and Elizabeth Broughton Samuel married Mabel Bradbury (born 4th May 1882) on 21st December 1901 at the Parish Church in Kirkby in Ashfield, they lived at 57 Milton Street, Kirkby in Ashfield and had the following children, Mabel, born 28th December 1903, Samuel born 20th February 1908, William born 22nd January 1911 and Ernest born 20th January 1914. In 1911 they lived at 57 Milton Street Kirkby in Ashfield. Commencing 25th February 1918 his widow Mabel was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Gunner Samuel Broughton initially enlisted on 6th January 1915 at Mansfield, he gave his age as 34 yrs and 68 days, he was a coal miner and his next of kin was his wife Mabel. He was posted to the Royal Field Artillery however on the 22nd January 1915 he was discharged from the Army as not likely to become an efficient soldier. He later was called up and served with the Royal Field Artillery and was killed in action on 3rd August 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Panel 5 and 9, Ypres, Belgium.
