Family History

Herbert Brooks was born in 1887 the son of the late William a coal miner hewer and the late Catherine Clara Brooks née Sheldon of Kirkby in Ashfield. William Brooks was born in 1855 at Bonsall he died in 1919 aged 64 yrs, Catherine Clara Sheldon was born in 1854 also at Bonsall she died in 1903 aged 49 yrs married on 11th November 1872 at Swanwick they went on to have 14 children. In 1911 his family were living at 21 Derby Road, Mutton Hill, Kirkby in Ashfield whilst he was lodging with his brother John and family at 6 King Street Kirkby.

Military History

Driver Herbert Brooks enlisted at Pontefract whilst residing at South Elmsall he served with the 32nd Divisional Ammunition Column, 155th brigade Royal Field Artillery. He died on 31st October 1918 and is buried at Kingsway Old Cemetery, Kirkby in Ashfield.
