Leonard Smith was born in 1888 at Lenton Nottingham, he was the son of the late Charles William Smith a labourer and Eliza Jane Smith née Dunstan, of Rose Cottage,Moreton, Rolleston, his father Charles William was born in 1851 at Spondon, his mother Eliza Jane Dunstan was born in 858 at Cuckney, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had 3 other children daughters Amy b1885 Lenton, Emily b1895 Upton and Gladys born 1902 Upton in the 1911 census his family are living at Fiskerton, Rolleston, his widowed mother Eliza Jane 53 yrs is living with her 2 daughter May 16 yrs and Gladys 9 years

Military History

Private Leonard Smith enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at West Bridgford, he initially served withe the service number 5657 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment before transferring to the North Staffordshire Regiment with the service number 40779 he was killed in action on 9th February 1917 and is buried at Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, France
