He was the son of Arthur Edwin and Annie Maria Smith of 9 Mary Terrace Meadows Nottingham. A notice of his death which appeared in the local paper gave his address as 13 Sunny Terrace, (-) Grove, Nottingham.
115th Coy. He is buried in Ferme-Olivier Cemetery (grave ref. Plot 3. Row D. Grave 8.)
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 9 June 1917: 'Smith. Killed in action Private Frederick Smith, Machine Gun Corps, age 29, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Smith, 9 Mary Terrace.' Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 15 June 1917: 'Private F Smith, Machine Gun Corps, 13 Sunny Terrace, (-) Grove, Nottingham, killed in action May 24th (sic), age 29 (sic).'
