Herbert Hancock

Son of Mrs Sophia Cooper (CWGC). At the time of the 1891 census Sophia (b. abt 1856, Chesterfield) and her first husband, Thomas, were living at 12 Preston(?) Terrace, in the civil parish of St Mary's, Nottingham, and the ecclesiastical parish of St Saviour's. They had five children, William (14), Emma (12), Ernest (10), Ethel (7) and Grace (4); Herbert was not born until the end of the year. By the time of the 1901 census Sophia was married to Joseph Cooper and living at 42 Woolmer Road, Meadows, together with five of her six children, William (24), Ernest (20), Ethel (17), Grace (15) and Herbert (9) who are described as Joseph's stepchildren. In 1911 Sophia and Joseph were still living at 42 Woolmer Road but only four children were with them; Ernest (30), Ethel (27), Grace (24) and Herbert (19), all of whom were unmarried. The census shows that Joseph (69) and Sophia (56) had been married for 11 years. Sophia's children were not recorded as Joseph's stepchildren and they entered on the census return that Sophia had had a total of four children born living of whom four still lived; this is clearly a mistake and it seems that they only recorded the four children who were still living at home. Sophia was still living at the same address at the time of her son's death in 1918.
