William Thomas Atkin

William Thomas Atkin was born in 1893 in Nottingham and was the son of James, a master baker, and his second wife Elizabeth Atkin née Kirt. His father James was born in 1849 in Stapleford and his first marriage was to Esther Ann Fowkes born 1853 in Nottingham, whom he married in 1874 in Nottingham. He and Esther had 4 children: Herbert Arthur b1876, John Everitt b1877, James Horace b1879 and Edwin b1881, all of whom were born in Nottingham. Esther Ann died in 1885 in Nottingham; she was 32 yrs of age. James remarried and married Elizabeth Kirt (b1851 Tapton Leicestershire) in 1886 at Nottingham. They went on to have the following five children, all born in Nottingham: Mabel Annie b1888, Millicent b1890, Annie Eliza b1892, William Thomas b1893 and Beatrice Kate b1895. In the 1911 census the family is living at 163 Trent Boulevard, West Bridgford, Nottingham, and are shown as James 60 yrs a master baker, who is living with his wife Elizabeth 60 yrs and six children from both his marriages: John E 33 yrs a baker, Edwin 29 yrs a van man, Mabel 22 yrs a shop assistant, Millicent 21 yrs a house worker, Annie 19 yrs a shop assistant and Beatrice 15 yrs. James and Elizabeth were living at the same address at the time of their son's death in 1918. In the 1911 census William has moved out of the family home; he is shown as being 17 yrs of age single and an apprentice carpenter. He is living at 48 Market Place, Newark on Trent, with John Oldham 34 yrs a carpenter and his wife.
