He was the only son of John and Charlotte Frettingham and the brother of Ada, Olive and Dorothy Frettingham. In 1911, they lived at 48, Muskham Street and later at 95, Wilford Crescent East (both Meadows, Nottingham).

He died in hospital of dysentery and is buried in Basra War Cemetery
