Family History

He was the son of George and Hannah Bowskill and the brother of Sarah, Percy, Rose and Charles Bowskill. Bowskill. In 1911 they lived at Clipstone. He was the husband of Lucy (née Coleman) Bowskill and the father of Charles, Cyril and Harry Bowskill. CWGC record gives his family's address as 7 Hampden Street, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

Military History

He enlisted on 17 October 1914 and was serving in 'A' Coy, 1/8th Bn, at the time of his death. His death was recorded in the 8th Battalion's war diary, 22 July 1915. He is buried in Sanctuary Wood cemetery (grave ref. II.F.19).

Bowskill stood 5' 5" tall and weighed 10 stone 6lbs on enlistment. His personal effects returned to Lucy Bowskill were 'dog pedigree, 2 notebooks, hymn book, bunch of keys, belt, letter, card' (ASR) Death notice published 13th August 1915 in the Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times : - “Pte. J. H. Bowskill, third son of Mr. Geo. Bowskill, of 31, Church-street, Warsop, was killed in action on July 22nd.
