John Henry James Hewes Bowskill was baptised on 2nd September 1894 at St James Church Brinsley, he was the son of George Bowskill a farm foreman and his second wife Hannah Hewes of Clipstone. His father George was born in 1859 at Elkeskey, his mother Hannah Hewes was born in 1870 at Greasley , they were married in 1891 at Mansfield, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood his siblings were Hubert b1894, Percy b1895, Rose,b1899 and Charles born 1906. His fathers 1st wife was Mary Jane Millings born 1866 at Harworth she died in 1890 she was 24 yrs of age and were married on 12th December 1882 at St Peters East Drayton they had 3 children. In the 1911 census the family were living at Gorsey Brecks, Clipstone, George 44 yrs a farm worker is living with his second wife Hannah 38 yrs and their children, John 20 yrs a farm labourer, Percy 15 yrs a farm boy, Rose 11 yrs and Charles 7 yrs of age. John married his wife Lucy Coleman (born 25th December 1892,they were married on 17TH May 1913 at St Wilfred’s Church, Kirkby in Ashfield, they lived at 13 Heaths Yard, Kirkby in Ashfield. Commencing 3rd January 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings aweek
He enlisted on 17 October 1914 and was serving in 'A' Coy, 1/8th Bn, at the time of his death. His death was recorded in the 8th Battalion's war diary, 22 July 1915. He is buried in Sanctuary Wood cemetery (grave ref. II.F.19).
Bowskill stood 5' 5" tall and weighed 10 stone 6lbs on enlistment. His personal effects returned to Lucy Bowskill were 'dog pedigree, 2 notebooks, hymn book, bunch of keys, belt, letter, card' (ASR)Death notice published 13th August 1915 in the Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times : - “Pte. J. H. Bowskill, third son of Mr. Geo. Bowskill, of 31, Church-street, Warsop, was killed in action on July 22nd.
