Family History

Horace Goff was born in 1895 he was the son of Andrew a bricklayers labourer and Elizabeth Goff née Holmes and the brother of Charlotte, Beatrice and Florrie Goff (later Compton) of Grosvenor Road Eastwood. Andrew Goff was born in 1856 in Norfolk, Elizabeth Holmes was born in 1861 at Cotmanhay, they were married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Grosvenor Road, Eastwood, Andrew is 55 yrs and a bricklayers labourer he is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and their children including Horace, 16 yrs a coal miner ganger.

Military History

Private Horace Goff enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 74th Field Ambulance Army Medical Corps. He was killed whilst assisting a wounded man (see letter) on 20th August 1916 and is buried at Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery , Bray-Sur-Somme
