Alfred Horace Cullingworth was born in 1892 at Nottingham and was the eldest son of Alfred a lithographic printer and Selina Cullingworth née Bradford of 13 Arno Avenue, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. His father Alfred was born in 1857 at Leeds, his mother Selina Bradford was born in 1867 at Alfreton, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Thirza b1887, Henry James b1892, Alfred Horace b1894, Ivy b1897, Stanley b1900, Sidney b1903, Charles Clifford b1904 and Reginald Cullingworth b1908 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Cedar Road Sherwood Rise Nottingham and are shown as Alfred 54 yrs a lithographic printer, he is living with his wife Selina 44 yrs and their children Therza 24 yrs a blouse maker, Henry James 19 yrs a bread deliverer, Alfred Horace 17 yrs a lace warehouse man, Ivy 14 yrs a lace warehouse worker, Stanley 11 yrs a scholar, Sidney 8 yrs a scholar, Charles Clifford 7 yrs a scholar and Reginald 3 yrs of age.
Corporal Alfred Horace Cullingworth, enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 1374 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. he was serving with the 2/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment when he was killed in action on 1st September 1918. He is buried in Aval Wood Military Cemetery, Vieux-Berquin. His brother Stanley was killed in action four days later.
His brother Private Stanley Cullingworth, served with the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 5th September 1918, aged 19. He is buried in Pont-D'Achelles Military Cemetery, Nieppe. In memoriam published 1st September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CULLINGWORTH. – In loving memory of my dear brothers, Corpl. Horace Cullingworth, Gloucester Regt., killed Sept. 1st, 1918, and Pte. Stanley Cullingworth,East Yorks Regt., killed Sept. 5th, 1918. Always remembered. – Thirza and Len. “CULLINGWORTH. – In loving memory of my dear sons, Corpl. Horace Cullingworth, Gloucester Regt., killed September 1st, 1918, aged 24, and Pte. Stanley, killed September 5th, 1918, aged 19, 11th East Yorks. – Loving mother, father, sisters, and brothers.
