Family History

Wilfred Ira Moss was born in 1895 at Smalley, Derbyshire, he was baptised on 29th September 1895 at Smalley, he was the son of John Mowbray Moss a mine contractor and Ellen Harriett Moss née Butt of 20 Constance Street, Basford, Nottingham. His father John Mowbray was born in 1861 at Smalley, his mother Ellen Harriett Butt was born in 1873 at Derby, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Ivanhoe Cottages, Smalley, John 50 yrs is a mine contractor, he is living with his wife Ellen 36 yrs and their children, Wilfred 16 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Catherine 15 yrs a hosiery hand John Herbert 12 yrs, Sylvia 10 yrs, Edie 8 yrs, Winifred 5 yrs and Robert William 1 year of age.

Military History

Lance Sergeant Wilfred Ira Moss enlisted on 16th November 1914 at Nottingham giving his age as 20 yrs and 10 months, he was a coal miner loader. He was initially posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, on 1st September 1916 he was transferred to the 7th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he was appointed to Lance Sergeant on 3rd May 1917. On 11th August 1917 he joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and was killed in action on 26th August 1918in Mesopotamia . His name is commemorated on the Tehran Memorial, Iran.
