He was the son of Thomas and Hilda Hutchby who died in 1911. He was the brother of Florence Hutchby. In 1911 the family lived at 13 Chard Street Basford Nottingham
Leslie Hutchby enlisted in The Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) towards the end of August 1914 and after initial training was posted to 1st Battalion in France. Leslie landed in France on 28 November 1914 and is likely to have arrived at the battalion on 7 December when a draft of 135 other ranks joined. They immediately began tours of duty in the front line trenches although freezing weather and then incessant rain had rendered these almost inhabitable. One of the officers likened getting in and out of the front line trench as being a ‘cardboard rabbit at a penny shooting gallery’. The enemy were only 120 yards away although he rated them as only fair shots. John Morse
