John Edward Lane was born in 1884 at Normanton on Soar and was the son of Thomas a farm labourer and Sarah Ann Lane née William of Glebe Cottages Tollerton. His father Thomas was born in 1855 at Colly Weston, Rutland, his mother Sarah Ann William was born in 1863 at Exton, Rutland , they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Oakham Registration district, they went on to have the following children, John Edward b1884 at Nomanton Edith Anne b1896 Stamford on Sour, Thomas William b1898 Stamford on Soar and Ethel May b1903 Tollerton. john Edward married Mary Jane Hubbard (born 31st July 1886 at West Bridgford) they were married 1909 and their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district they lived at New Row ,Plumtree, Nottinghamshire, they had the following children, William Horace born 29th May 1909, Charles Edward born 14th May 1914 and Gladys Mary born 13th January 1916. In the 1911 census John Edward and his family are living at Glebe Lane, Tollerton and are shown as John Edward 24 yrs a farm labourer he is living with his wife Mary Jane 23 yrs and their son Horace William 1 year of age. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at Barton in Fabis and are shown as Thomas Lane 56 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 48 yrs and their children, Thomas William 13 yrs a scholar and Ethel May 8 yrs a scholar. Following John's death his widow Mary Jane was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week which commenced on 26th August 1918.
Private John Edward Lane enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Tollerton he served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 20th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A,
