George Pyatt, also known as George Whealdon, was born John WYATT on 10th January 1890 at Nottingham and was the son of John William WYATT a coal miner and Eliza WYATT (née Bennett) of 16 Lambert Street, Hyson Green. His father John Wyatt was born in 1867 at Bolton, Lancashire; he died in 1917 aged 53 at Basford. His mother Eliza Frances Bennett was born in 1864 at Chatham; she died in 1912 aged 49 yrs. They were married in 1884 at Gravesend, Kent, and went on to have the following children, Evelyn b1885 Radford, Florence b1886, Radford, George b1890 Lenton, John T b1891 Beeston, Violet b1892 Radford, Bertie b1894 Lenton (died 1905 aged 12 yrs), Jessie b1896 Lenton, Alfred b1899 Lenton, Herbert b1899 Lenton and Claude b1903 Lenton. The Wyatt family was to be found living in Nottingham in the 1891 census at 40 Melton Terrace, Melton Street, London Road, Nottingham. John was 23 yrs of age and a coal miner living with his wife Eliza 25 yrs and his children, Florence 5yrs, George 2 yrs and John T. 6 months. By the 1901 census the family was living at 3 Gordon Place, Park Street, Nottingham. By the 1911 census his mother was living at 30 Beresford Street, Radford, and shown as Eliza Wyatt 45 yrs a lace worker, married, and living with her children, John Thomas 20 yrs an out of work painter, Jessie 15 yrs a packer, Herbert 13 yrs a scholar, Alfred 11 yrs a scholar and Claude 8 yrs a scholar. George and his father John were not listed at the address on the night of the census. George was using the surname of WHEALDON around the time of his marriage, giving his name as George Whealdon when he married Beatrice Lock (born 13th April 1888) on 7th June 1911 at the Nottingham register office. Witnesses to the marriage were Alfred and Florence Hunt. He and Beatrice went on to have the following children, Beatrice Maud Whealdon born 11th August 1911, George Henry Whealdon born 21st May 1913 and Gladys Wheadon born 7th August 1916. The family lived at 6 Gladstone Terrace, Gladstone Street, Basford, Nottingham. His widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 20th August 1917. Beatrice married Richard Hunt in 1918 at Nottingham.
Private George Pyatt enlisted on 14th June 1907 at Nottingham. He was 17 yrs and 10 months of age and a coal miner working at Wollaton Colliery. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and on 14th June 1908 joined the Special Reserve at Chilwell Camp, Nottingham, by which time he was 18 yrs and 10 months old. He landed in France on 11th November 1914 and was wounded on 20th October 1915 (gun shot wound to the thigh) and was returned to England. After recovering, he embarked for France on 15th August 1916 and was posted to the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment on 7th September 1916. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
An army service record has been found on which a form W5080 (surviving relatives) has been included. The form was submitted by his widow Beatrice Hunt and he was shown as Private George Pyatt alias Whealdon. His widow stated she was Beatrice Hunt formerly Whealdon of 4 Tennyson Terrace, Hawksley Road, Hyson Green previously of 6 Gladstone Terrace, Gladstone Street, Nottingham. She also stated George's parents were both deceased and that she had three children, Beatrice Maud Whealdon born 11th August 1911, George Henry Whealdon born 21st May 1913 and Gladys Whealdon born 7th August 1916. all of whom were living at 4 Tennyson Terrace. She further stated George had three brothers John Wyatt, George Wyatt and Herbert Wyatt and three sisters Florrie Hunt (née Wyatt), Evelyn Scotorn (née Wyatt) and Violet Wyatt. Medal index cards have been found for Private 2036 George Whealdon 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment with a disembarkation date of 11th November 1914 and also for Private 2036 George Pyatt of the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He is recorded on the two war memorials as George Wheedon.
