Family History

Arthur William Toplis was born in 1881 at Calais, France and was the son of Robert a lace draughtsman and Annie Toplis née Crooks, His father Robert was born in 1856 at Derby and his mother Annie Crooks was born in 1856 at Nottingham, they were married on 12th August 1876 at the Consuls office, Calais, France, they went on to have the following children, Robert George b1877, Alice Maud b1878 and Arthur b1881 all were born in Calais, France, the family returned to Nottingham and had the following children, Ada Annie b1882, Kate b1885, Harold b1887 and May b1893 all were born in Nottingham. His parents both died his father Robert in 1908 and his mother Annie in 1910. Arthur William Toplis married his wife Ethel Maud De Clerk (born 29th November 1881) in Nottingham in 1901 They lived at 6 Barley Row, Nottingham, they had two children of Louis born 1902 and Bessie born 1908. In the 1911 census the family lived at 2 Stoneleigh Terrace Portland Road Nottingham and were shown as Arthur 31 yrs a levers designer, he is living with his wife Ethel 29 yrs and their children, Louis 9 yrs and Cissie 3 yrs. Following his death his widow Ethel Maud was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 17th March 1919.

Military History

Private Arthur Toplis enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 13th battalion Essex Regiment. He died on 27th May 1918 whilst a prisoner of war. He is buried at Conde Sur L'escaut communal cemetery (France)
