Herbert was the son of Richard Winter, a lace maker, and his first wife, Esther Sophia Winter (nee Hall). Richard and Esther were married in 1875 and had at least eight children: Walter Richard, William Arthur, Gertrude Katherine, Anne (Annie) Sophia, Joseph Thomas, Winifred Florence (Florence), Edwin Arthur and Herbert. Esther Sophia died in 1895 (Jul/Aug/Sep) at the age of 42 and Richard married Mary Catherine Clark in 1897 (Jul/Aug/Sep). In 1881 Richard and Esther were living at 9 Kippis Street, Nottingham, with their three children, Walter (4), William (3) and Gertrude (1). Also living in the household was a lodger, Mark Thraves (68). By 1891 Richard and Esther were at 12 Rick Street, Nottingham. Their two oldest boys, Walter and William, were already at work as a hosiery framework knitter and printer respectively. Gertrude, their eldest daughter, was not at home on the night of the census, but four younger children, Anne Sophia (9), Joseph Thomas (5), Winifred Florence (3) and Edwin Arthur (1) were at home. Also in the household was Richard's widowed aunt, Catherine Taylor (50). Herbert was born two years later in 1893 (registered Jan/Feb/Mar) but the family also suffered three deaths in the next few years; Herbert's brother, Edwin, died in 1893 (Jan/Feb/Mar) aged 2, his mother in 1895 and his sister, Annie Sophia, died aged 16 in 1897 (Oct/Nov/Dec) a few months after their father had remarried. Richard and Mary (54) were living at 10 Hedderley Street, Union Road, Nottingham, at the time of the 1901 Census. Only four of Richard's children were at home; Gertrude, Joseph, Winifred and Herbert. Three years later in 1904 Richard's eldest daughter, Gertrude, married George Goodger and in 1911 they were living at 125 Thorneywood Rise, Nottingham, with their daughter, Gertrude (6). Also in the household was George's sister-in-law, Winifred Florence Winter. Richard and Mary were still living at 10 Hedderley Street with only Joseph and Herbert still at home, Richard's other two sons, Walter and William, having already married and left home. Richard's second wife, Mary Catherine, died on 10 October 1915 while Richard died six years later in 1921 aged 71. Of his surviving five children, Walter Richard died in 1942 aged 65, William Arthur on 22 October 1946, Joseph Thomas in 1949 aged 63, Winifred Florence Treadwell in 1966 aged 77 and Gertrude Katherine Goodger in 1968 aged 89.
Formerly 31550 Notts and Derby Regiment. Herbert died in the Military Hospital, Whalley, Lancashire, of the effects of gas poisoning. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref. 8380 C). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 7 June 1918: ‘Winter. Died in hospital from gas poisoning, June 5th, Private Herbert Winter, Royal Scots. Brother Joe (in France) and Amy [sister-in-law]. Our brother, Kate [Gertrude Katherine] and Flo [Winifred Florence].’ (Joseph married Amy H Holmes in 1915.) His sister, Gertrude Katherine Goodger, was his sole legatee. There is an Army record (Short Service Attestation) for a Herbert Winter, painter, born Nottingham 1893, who attested on 8 September 1914 aged 21 years 274 days, and joined the Rifle Brigade (3619) on 9 September 1914 but was discharged on 20 October 1914 having served only 43 days (discharged IAW para 3920 (iii) (e) KR).
