George was born in 1895 in Huthwaite and was the son of John a coal miner and Annie Starkey of 2 Hardwick Street Sutton in Ashfield. His father John had been born in 1856 Bedworth, Warwickshire and his mother Annie was born in 1855 in Worksop, They were married C1875 and had 4 children, sadley 1 died in infancy prior to the 1911 census, their children were Joseph b1885 Worksop, Mary Cicely b1891 Worksop and George Henry b1895 Huthwaite. In the 1911 census the family are living at Huthwaite Road, Sutton in Ashfield , and are shown as , John 55 yrs a coal miner , he is living with his wife Annie 55yrs and their children Joseph 26 yrs a coal miner, Mary Cicely 20 yrs and George Henry 16 yrs a coal miner, day teller. His mother Annie died aged 59 yrs in 1915 , the event being registered in Mansfield registration district.
George enlisted in September 1914 in Sutton in Ashfield , he served with the service number 13796 in the Leicestershire Regiment , later transferring to the 2nd battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. His medal index card shows he first entered a theatre of war in France on 26th March 1915. He was killed in action on 9th May 1915 and has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium
Notts Free Press – August 1915. The war has claimed two more Huthwaite young men as victims. They are Private John Walter Lee, ..., and Private George Henry Starkey, son of Mr. J. Starkey, Sutton road. The former was only 19 years of age and the latter 21, and both enlisted early in September last. ... The news of both fatalities has been sent to Huthwaite by regimental chums of both heroes. Mansfield Advertiser – 20th. August, 1915. MEMORIAL SERVICE AT HUTHWAITE On Sunday evening in Huthwaite Parish Church, a memorial service was held in honour of Private J.W. Lee, 8th. Notts and Derbyshire, and G.H. Starkey, 2nd. Lincolns, both of whom have been killed in action. There was a large congregation, and the military element was represented by the Sutton Citizen Army (under Mr. C.O. Wright) Sutton Cadet Corps (Lieutenant Wilson and Sergeant-Major Robinson) and Huthwaite Scouts, Boys’ Brigade, and Cadets (Sergt.-Major Hall). The Rev. Beswick conducted the service. Notts Free Press – 24th March, 1916. The death of Private George Starkey (son of Mr. J. Starkey of Sutton Road) which was unofficially, though positively, reported last May and was contradicted in certain quarters, has now been placed beyond all doubt by the official intimation from the War Office, which states that Private Starkey was killed on May 9th , 1915. The usual messages of sympathy from the King and Queen and Lord Kitchener have also been received by his father.
