Family History

Father: William Henry Wilce, born in 1857 at Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire and working as a railway inspector and then a railway goods guard. Mother: Ruth Wilce, born in 1863 at Wath-under-Dearne, Yorkshire. Brothers: William D., born in 1885, Arthur, born in 1888,and working as a railway clerk and then a railway fireman, Herbert, born in 1892, Harry, born in 1895 and working as a pawnbroker's assistant and Edwin, born in 1897 and employed as a hosiery worker. Sisters: Ellen,born in 1884 and working as a shirt machinist, Blanche, born in 1889 and working as a machine tucker,Olive E., born in 1900, Maggie Haigh, born in 1902 in Nottingham and Dorothy, born in 1904 in Nottingham. Apart from the last three children, all the others were born in Manchester. On arriving in Nottingham, the family settled at 1 Glapton Road, Meadows, Nottingham.

Military History

Wilce was called up for service, and following training he was drafted to France. After the Germans had launched their offensive Operation Michael and pushed back the Allied armies. Wilce's unit took part in defending the approaches to Amiens. He was killed in action and buried at Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme.
