By 1911 Edward Jones had been committed to the Philanthropic Society Farm School at Charlwood, Reigate Surrey. Originally established to care for homeless children, during the 19th and early 20th centuries the school became classed as a reformatory. Most of its pupils were committed by magistrates and paid for by local authorities. Farm work was the principal occupation, although carpentry, tailoring and other trades were also taught. It must be assumed that Jones had broken the law. He probably enlisted as a regular on discharge from the reformatory. There may have been a relationship between the farm and the local West Surrey Regiment or Jones may have opted for that unit in order to serve with friends made during his sentence.

Family History
He was the son of Edward and Mary Ann Jones and brother of Ernest Jones. In 1901, they lived at 22, Selbourne Street, Pym Street, St Ann's, Nottingham. In 1911 Edward snr and Mary Ann lived at 20, Selbourne Street.
Military History
2nd Bn He enlisted at Guilford. He arrived in France 8/11/1914 and is buried in Y Farm Military Cemetery Bois-Grenier.
