Richard Arthur Hughes was born on 12th July 1871 at Holy Cross, Liverpool and was the son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Hughes. Richard married his first wife Amy Brewer on 8th February 1904 at Holy Trinity Church , Walton Breck, Lancashire they had a son Richard Arthur Hughes born 4th February 1906 , Amy died in 1907 at West Derby, Lancashire aged 31 yrs Richard Arthur married his second with Maria Margaret Hicks (born 30th January 1885 ) on 6th November 1909 in Cork Ireland, they went on to have the following children, Edwin born 9th September 1910, Herbert Ernest born 17th March 1912, Robert born 27th November 1914 and Thomas born 14th November 1916. they lived at 10 Lytton Street, Gordon Road, Nottingham. Probate , proven (with will) 21st September 1917 at Manchester, shows him as Richard Arthur Hughes of 5 Derwent Road, Stretford, Manchester, regimental sergeant major 12251 in the South Lancashire Regiment, died 26th April 1917 at the Devonshire Hospital, Buxton, Derbyshire, his effects of £274 were left to Maria Margaret Hughes widow. His widow Maria was awarded a pension of 38 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 29th October 1917.

Military History

Regimental Sergeant Major Richard Arthur Hughes was an army pensioner having served 21 yrs with the South Lancashire Regiment when war broke out, he enlisted at Warrington, Lancashire, on 4th September 1914 giving his age 43 yrs and his occupation as that of a clerk, He was promoted to the rank of Colour Sergeant upon enlisted and served with the South Lancashire Regiment and was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major on 23rd November 1914. He served at the South Lancashire Regiment depot and he died of pneumonia on 26th April 1917 at the Devonshire Hospital, Buxton, Derbyshire, he is buried at Stretford Cemetery Grave Reference: K. 4. Cemetery
