Family History

Sydney Alexander Close was born in 1891 at Edingley and was the son of John Close a warehouseman and the late Eliza Close of 10 Simons Terrace, Westminster Street, St Ann's His father John was born in 1834 in Woburn, Bedfordshire, his mother Eliza was born in 1861 at Retford, she died in 1905 at Nottingham, she was 44 yrs of age, they were married C1881 and went on have the following children, William b1887 Battersea. Lena Elizabeth b1888 Clapham, John Henry b1885 Edingley, Sydney Alexander b1891 Edingley, Rennie b1893 Edingley and Louisa Isabella Close b1896 at Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family lived at 10 Simons Terrace Westminster Street St Ann's Nottingham and were shown as John 77 yrs a widow and retired warehouseman he is living with his children, John Henry 26 yrs a beer bottler, Sydney Alexander 20 yrs a board bearer, Rennie 18 yrs a carter and Louisa Isabella 15 yrs an errand girl.

Military History

Private Sydney Alexander Close enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was discharged from the Army on 10th December 1915 being no longer fit for war service due to pulmonary tuberculosis. He died on 8th July 1916 at Nottingham
