Family History

George Wheelicker was born in 1887 in Awsworth and was the son of Samuel a coal miner and Mary Wheelicker née Inger of 5 Ashwell Street Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father Samuel was born in 1862 in Awsworth and his mother Mary Inger was born in 1865 in Newthorpe, they were married in 1882 their marriage was record in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 11 children, sadly three of whom died in infancy or early childhood their surviving children were William b1883 Awsworh, Sarah Ann b1884 Awsworth, George b1887 Awsworth, Sam b1890 Denaby, Yorkshire, John b1894 Denaby, Mary Jane b1900 Basford, Arthur b1903 Basford and Harry b1905 Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Ashwell Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham and are shown as Samuel 49 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary 46 yrs and their children, Sarah Ann 27 yrs a lace dresser, George 24 yrs a motor driver, Sam 21 yrs a coal miner, John 17 yrs a hosiery finisher, Mary Jane 11 yrs a scholar, Arthur 8 yrs a scholar and Harry 6 yrs. George married Ethel Lily Wright (born 6th September 1890) in 1912 in Nottingham and they went on to have two children George b1913 and Gladys b1914 both born in Nottingham, they lived at 6 Freehold Street Bulwell, Nottingham. Commencing 13th August 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week. His widow later re married to become Mrs Hackett and lived at 34 Cowley Street, Old Basford.

Military History

Private George Wheelicker, enlisted at Nottingham and served with 406th Motor Transport Company, Army Service Corps, he was attached to 120th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, when he died on 13th February 1917 of pneumonia he was buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery.
