Marshall Shipside was born in 1895 the son of George Henry a lace curtain draughtsman and Sarah Edna Shipside née Young and the brother of Rex, Madge and Lawrence Shipside. George was born in 1869 at Nottingham, Sarah Enda Young was born in 1867 at Melbourne, Derbyshire, married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they had 4 children. In 1911 the family lived at 15 Beech Avenue and later at 217 Gladstone Street (both Nottingham).
Lance Sergeant Marshall Shipside, enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), he died of wounds on 30th April 1917. He is buried in La Chapelette British and Indian Cemetery, Peronne.
In memoriam published 30th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SHIPSIDE. – In ever-loving memory of Lance-Sergeant Marshall Shipside, who was killed April 30th, 1917. Until we meet. We cannot, Lord, Thy purpose see, but all is best that's done by Thee. Too dearly loved to be forgotten. – From father, mother, sister, brother, 217, Gladstone-street, Sherwood-rise, and Rex [1] (in France); also from his loving fiancée Winnie (Cis), The Gables, Newbold-road, Chesterfield. “SHIPSIDE. – In ever-loving memory of my dear nephew, Marshall Shipside, who was killed in France April 30th, 1917. His home address shown in the 1918 Absent Voters List was 217 Gladstone Street, Nottingham.
