He was born about 1881. He was the husband of Sheila Margaret (known as Margaret) Doyle of 81 Windermere Road Forest Fields Nottingham. In 1911 Joseph, a window cleaner, and Margaret (b. Crowland, Lincs) had been married for 6 years and had two sons; Joseph Edward (4, b. Nottingham 1907) and Sylvester Dennis (2 b. Nottingham 7 November 1908, died Nottingham 1990 age 81). They also had a boarder, John Allen (25). His pension record cards show his wife as Shirley Margaret born 7th March 1884 and his children, Joseph Edward born 22nd February 1907, Sylvestor Dennis born 7th November 1908 and Margaret Doreen born 3rd July 1911 Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 24th May 1915.
11th Bty. He enlisted on 19 January 1903. His service record has not survived but Joseph probably joined on a Short Service Attestation and later transferred to the Army Reserve and so was mobilised on the outbreak of war. He entered theatre (France) on 6 October 1914 and was killed less than four weeks later. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial (Panel Reference:1). He qualified for the 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Obituary published Nottingham Evening Post 23rd November 1914 :- “DOYLE. – Killed in action, Gunner Joseph Doyle, Royal Field Artillery, aged 39 years, beloved husband of Margaret Doyle, of 81, Windermere-road, Forest Fields.”
