Family History

Godfrey was born in 1888 the son of Godfrey (born Huthwaite 1853) and Elizabeth Marriott, née Brammer (born Sutton in Ashfield 1853 who married in the Mansfield Registration area in 1876. He was the brother of Thomas Edward b. 1882 H William Albert b.1885 and Godfrey b.1888 (all of their children were born in Huthwaite). Godfrey senior died in 1892 and Elizabeth married John Bonser in 1901. In 1911 the family were living on Swan Yard Huthwaite.

Military History

Godfrey enlisted in Mansfield and served initially with service number 20239 in the Sherwood Foresters, his medal index card showing he first entered theatre (Balkans) on 28th May 1915. He was transferred to the 1/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and was killed in action on 14th November 1916 on the Western Front. He was buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.

I think I see his smiling face, As he bade me his last "Good-bye"; As he left forever, in a distant land to die. But the hardest part is yet to come, When the heroes all return; As I miss amongst the cheering crowd, The face of one I loved. From his loving Mother, Brothers, and Brother's Wife (Nellie).
