Bertrand Whittle was born in 1898 and was the son of Arthur a lace maker and the late Elizabeth Whittle née Cox of 34 Maples Street Forest Side Nottingham. Arthur was born in Lenton in 1859 Elizabeth Cox was born in 1859 at Sneinton she died in 1913 aged 54 yrs, they were married on 25th December 1881 at the Parish Church, New Lenton they had 8 children, 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 34 Maples Street, Radford, Nottingham, Arthur is 52 yrs and a lace maker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 52 yrs and 6 of their children.
Private Bertrand Whittle was called up on 6th June 1916 at Nottingham, giving his age as 18 yrs and 48 days, he was a bobbin winder, his address was 34 Maples Street, Nottingham, his next of kin was his father Arthur. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 12th December 1916 and posted to teh training battalion. He landed in France on 27th May 1917 where he served with the 8th battalion East Yorkshire Regiment He was reported missing and later killed in action on 26th September, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
