Joseph Wardle was born in 1891 the son of Albert a coal miner and Frances Wardle (née King). Albert was born in Basford in 1867 and Frances King in 1868 at Crewe. Married in 1888, they had ten children eight surviving infancy - Joseph b.1891, Frances b.1896, Thomas b.1898, Edith b.1900, Albert b.1901, Fanny b.1903, Elizabeth b.1905 and Benjamin b.1909. In 1911, they lived at 38 Hyson Street, Radford Road, Hyson Green, Nottingham. Joseph married Ethel Ordoyno in 1913 at Nottingham. They lived at 37, Court Street, Hyson Green. Their daughter Ethel was born in 1914 but died the following year.

In memoriam published 13th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WARDLE. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Cpl. Joseph Wardle, M.G.C., killed in action May 13th, 1917. – Wife, daughter, mother, father, brother Tom in France. “WARDLE. – In remembrance of Corpl. J. Wardle, killed in action April 13th [sic], 1917.
