Family History

George Alfred Vickers was born in 1898 in Derby and was the only surviving child of Alfred an electrician and Urania Vickers née Birch of 6 Stanley Avenue Leslie Road Forest Fields Nottingham. His father Alfred was born in 1869 in Lenton and his mother was born in 1870 in Basford, they were married in 1890 in Nottingham and went on to have 3 children two of whom died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 41 Laurie Ave, Forest Fields, Nottingham and are shown as Alfred 42 yrs an electrician, he is living with his wife Urania 41 yrs and George Alfred 13 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private George Alfred Vickers, attested on 22nd May 1916 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 158 days, his address as 6 Stanley Ave, Forest Fields, Nottingham, his occupation was that of a grocers assistant and his next of kin was his father Alfred of the same address. The following day his was posted to the reserves, he was mobilised for war on 31st August 1916 and posted to the 2/7th Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He embarked from England on 5th February 1917 and arrived at Etaples on 6th February 1917, he died of pneumonia at No. 24 General Hospital on 17th April 1917. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.(Grave Ref XIX. A. 14)

George Alfred Vickers, Royal Scots, aged 19 years, who died in France April 17th, 1917.
