Family History

Ernest was born on 12th August 1898 in Blackwell, Derbyshire and was the son of Ernest Albert a coal miner and Emma Laitt nee Boyd, his father Ernest senior was born in Blackwell in 1875 and his mother Emma had been born in 1877 in North Wingfield. They were married in North Wingfield on 14th April 1897 and they had 8 children sadly two died in infancy prior to 1911 , their children were Emma b1898 Blackwell, Ernest Wiliam b1899 Blackwell, Joseph b1900 Blackwell, Herbert George b1903 Blackwell, Isaac b1904 Blackwell, Mary Helen b1911 Huthwaite. It would therefore appear that the family moved from Blackwell to Huthwaite between the births of their last two children Isaac in 1904 and Mary Helen in 1911 In the 1911 census the family are shown as living at Harper Lane, Huthwaite, Ernest Albert 36 yrs is a coal miner and is living with his wife Emma 34 yrs and their children , Emma 13 yrs, Ernest William 12 yrs, Joseph 11 yrs, Herbert George 8yrs, Isaac 7 yrs and Mary Helen 2 months of age.

Military History

Ernest enlisted in Nottingham 2nd March 1916 , however it took until 13th May 1918 before he was called up and mobilised for active service. He gave his age as 19 yrs and 8 months his address as 95 Station Road, Huthwaite. He gave his occupation as coal miner/hewer his next of kin as his father Ernest Albert of the same address and his relgion as church of England. He joined the Sherwood Foresters once called up and eventually arrived on the Western Front on 20th August 1918 , on 9th September 1918 he was posted to the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters. However within two weeks on 22nd September 1918 he was killed in action, he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Vis en Artois memorial France.
