Family History

Leonard Simpson was born in 1888 the son of John a joiner and Jane Simpson née Henson of 9 Birkin Avenue Hyson Green Nottingham. John was born in 1855 at Kirklington, Jane Henson was born in 1865 in Birmingham, married in 1885 at Nottingham they went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, in 1911 the family were living at 11 Oldknow Street, Hyson Green, John 56 yrs is a joiner he is living with his wife Jane 46 yrs Leonard married Gertrude Mary Roberts in 1911 in Nottingham, In 1911 they lived at 468 Berridge Road Hyson Green, Leonard 23 yrs a tobacco manufacturer is living with his wife Gertrude 21 yrs.

Military History

Lance Corporal Leonard Simpson enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 9th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He landed in France as a reinforcement to 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 15th January 1915 and was killed in action on 4th November 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (Panel 108 to 111). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
