John Sanders was born in 1884 the son of George a levers lace maker and the late Harriet Sanders née Gilbert of 10 Chapel Street, Bobbers Mill, Nottingham. George was born in 1847 in Nottingham, Harriett Gilbert was born in 1847 at Bolsover, Harriett died in 1910 aged 63 yrs, married in 1884 at Derby they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. John married Alice Haddon in 1905 at Nottingham, they went on to have 4 children, Eleanor b1907, Hetty b1908, John Thomas b1913 and Herbert b1916. In 1911 the family lived at 12 Athol Terrace, Egypt Road, Basford, he was a lace maker. The family later lived at Midlothian Terrace Gregory Boulevard Hyson Green Nottingham.
Rifleman John Sanders enlisted at Newcastle Upon Tyne, he served initially with service number 165287 in the Royal Field Artillery. He was serving with the 8th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, when died of wounds on 7th August 1917. He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
In memoriam published 7th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SANDERS. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Rifleman Jack Sanders, late 36, Oldknow-street, who died of wounds received in action August 7th, 1917.
