Family History

Joseph William Newbold was born in 1899 and was the son of Henry a carter and Elizabeth Newbold née Squires of 52 Bridlington Street Hyson Green Nottingham. His father Henry was born in 1851 in Warwick and his mother Elizabeth Squires was born in 1857 in Barrow Upon Soar, they were married in 1876 in Barrow Upon Soar and went on to have 16 children , however 8 of them died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children listed on the 1901/1911 census are William b1879 Barrow Upon Soar, John Henry b1882 Nottm, Clara b1884 Nottm , Beatrice b1887 Nottm, Thomas b1889, Ellen Thirza b1892 Nottm , Elizabeth b1895 Nottm, and Joseph b1899 Nottm In the 1911 census the family are living at 62 Lamcote Grove, Nottingham and are shown as Henry 60 yrs a carter , he is living with his wife Lizzie 54 yrs and his children , Joe 12 yrs, Lizzie 17 yrs , and his married daughter Eliza Baker 21 yrs and her husband Sydney 24 yrs and their son Walter 1 month old.

Military History

Rifleman Joseph William Newbold, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the Rifle Brigade, attached 1/5th Battalion London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade), died of wounds in No. 45 Casualty Clearing Station on 30th August 1918. He is buried in Bac-Du-Sud British Cemetery, Bailleul.

In memoriam published 30th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NEWBOLD. – In loving memory of Joseph Newbold, died of wounds August 30th, 1918, aged 19.
