Stephen Lindley Middleton was born in 1898 at Nottingham, the son of Ernest a lace maker and Madalene Middleton née Brindley of 1 Kirkstead Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. Ernest was born in 1867 at Catle Donnington, Madelene Brindley was born in 1878 at Birmingham, married in 1896 at Nottingham they had 4 children their other children were Ernest, Rosa and Harold Middleton. In 1911 the family lived at 16 Bateman Street Hyson Green Nottingham Ernest is 44 yrs and a lace maker,

Military History

Private Stephen Lindley Middleton enlisted on 28th September 1916 at Nottingham, he was posted to the reserves and called up for service on 1st May 1917 at Nottingham giving his age as 18 yrs and 307 days, his occupation was that of a brass finisher. He landed in France on 22nd September 1917 and was posted to the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters on 8th February 1918. Killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 20, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) having no known grave his name is commemorated on The Arras Memorial, France.
