Family History

William Machin was born in 1897 the son of the late Samuel Thomas a railway engine fireman Jane Machin née Shipston and the brother of Edward Alexander, Sarah Ellen and Samuel Arthur Machin. Samuel Thomas was born in 1870 at Radford, he died in 1904 aged 34 yrs, Jane Shipston was born in 1871 at Basford, they were married in 1890 at Nottingham, they had 7 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 3 Mann Street, Basford, Nottingham. His widowed mother was living at 375 Berridge Road, Hyson Green at the time of Williams death.

Military History

Sergeant William Machin enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Hyson Green, he was killed in action, 21st March 1918, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) Having no known grave his name is Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.
