Thomas was born in 1893 the son of William a tin plate worker and Caroline Knott née Pitts of 7 Vincent Terrace Randal Street Hyson Green Nottingham. William was born in 1861 at Exeter, Caroline Pitt was born in 1862 also at Exeter, married in 1883 at Exeter they had 10 children. In 1911 the family were living at 60 Mill Row, Kingsland, Hoxton William is 50 yrs and a tin plate worker, Thomas has now left the family home and has joined the Army, he is in barracks at Winchester with the King's Royal Rifle Corps he is 18 yrs of age and single.
Rifleman Thomas Knott enlisted on 30th January 1911 at London, he was 18 yrs and 4 months and a general labourer. He was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Crops and served with them until his discharge on 25th April 1917. He was posted to India on 29th April 1912 and served there until 16t October 1914 when he was returned to England. He landed in France on 20th December 1914. He returned home on 11th March 1915 and returned to France on 8th June 1915, he was later posed to the Balkans where he served at Salonica from 25th November 1915 returning home on 4th December 1916 after suffering from Malaria. He appeared before a medical board on 4th April 1917 where he was found to be no longer fit for war service and discharged on 25th April 1917 his discharge address being 35 Buckland Street, Hoxton, London. He died on 14th May 1917, his name is commemorated on the memorial at Nunhead (All Saints) Cemetery London.
