Family History

Walter Goulding was born in 1895 the son of George Harry a brewery clerk and Hannah Goulding née Ashmore and the brother of George James, Elsie and Gladys Goulding. In 1911 they lived at 50 Brushfield Street and later at 550 Berridge Road West (both Hyson Green Nottingham). George Harry was born in 1872 at Newcastle under Lyme, Hannah Ashmore was born in 1871 also at Newcastle under Lyme, married on 4th August 1890 at St Georges Church, Newcastle under Lyme they went on to have 4 children. In 1911 the family are living at 50 Brushfield Street, Hyson Green Nottingham, George Harry is 39 yrs and is a brewery clerk, he is living with his wife Hannah 40 yrs and their 4 children, Walter 16 yrs is a house painter, the family are living with his grandmother Hannah Ashmore 63 yrs.

Military History

Private Walter Goulding enlisted on 4th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 19 yrs and 183 days, he was a painter and decorator, he joined his battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlands at Aldershot on 11th September 1914. He embarked from Folkstone on 4th October 1916 and was killed in action on 27th June 1916, he is buried at Vermelles British Cemetery (grave ref IV.A.12)

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 15 July 1916. 'Goulding, killed in action June 27th 1916, Private Walter Goulding, youngest son of Mr and Mrs GH Goulding of 650 (sic) Berridge Road West, age 21 years.'
