Alfred Diggle was born in 1896 the son of George a hosiery trimmer and Marie Diggle née Powis and the brother of John, Albert and Louis Diggle. George was born in 1858 and Maria Powis was born in 1859 both were born in Basford, married in 1877 at Radford they went on to have 10 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 4 Randal Street Hyson Green Nottingham George is 53 yrs and a hosiery trimmer.
Private Alfred Diggle, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Hyson Green. He served with the 8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, was killed in action on 17th October 1918. The former Robin Hood Rifleman is buried in Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension.
In memoriam published 17th October 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “DIGGLE. – In loving memory of Pte. Alfred Diggle, 4 Randal-street, killed in action October 17th, 1918.
